This is the second report on the spontaneous formation of muscle-derived tumors in mice lacking dysferlin. As we reported earlier this year (Schmidt WM et al "DNA damage, somatic aneuploidy, and malignant sarcoma susceptibility in muscular dystrophies." PLoS Genet. 2011 Apr;7(4):e1002042. Epub 2011 Apr 14)1, mice on the C57BL/10 background harboring the SJL-derived mutation within the dysferlin gene are prone to develop skeletal muscle associated sarcomas beyond the age of 20 months. Sher and colleagues herewith confirm our previously published finding that dysferlin-deficient mice develop muscle-derived sarcomas, which clearly strengthens our proposed concept of a cancer-related pathology in muscular dystrophy.
