Missed important reference

The authors of this paper would like to note that we have just found an important reference. In 2009, a study using sequences from influenza A polymerase mRNAs first noted species specific distributions of (+)RNA folding free energies. This work was published by the Panayotis V Benos lab in: Genome Biology (2009), 10:R18. We were unaware of this reference when we published our study. Our work confirms their results for the polymerase genes and expands to include the other viral coding regions, the (-)RNA, and also analyzes structure in addition to folding free energy. We are sorry that we missed this reference.
