clarifiaction question

Posted by KPM14 on 17 Feb 2013 at 19:15 GMT

Hi, Could you clarify for me what you mean by
"extent of occurrence" in regards to the geographic distribution of anurans in beginning of the methods? I attempted to track down that information using your citation, but I can't seem to determine how the original distributions were determined. Thank you!

Extent of occurrence refers to a range size measure that corresponds to the approximate area contained within the geographic limits of a species' occurrence (Gaston 1994), which in our case comes from expert drawn maps obtained from the global amphibian assessment (IUCN 2009). This maps can be further used to measure species' range size as the number of cells in which a species is recorded of a gridded layer (Brown 1995, Gaston 2003), as commonly done in macroecological studies.
