Competing Interests

This study analyses the influence of the IUCN Red List on newspaper coverage. At the same time, two of the authors, Kaifu and Shiraishi, are members of the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Anguillid Eel Specialist Group (AESG) and participated in the Red List assessments of Anguilla species published in 2014 and 2020. While there are no financial conflicts of interest associated with their membership in AESG, their affiliation with the organisation that is the subject of this research is disclosed here for transparency. this does not alter our adherence to PLOS ONE policies on sharing data and materials.
