Competing Interests
One of the co-authors is affiliated with Cotton Incorporated, which was one of the organizations funding the project. The inclusion of Dr. Robert Nichols as co-author is justified scientifically as he provided much needed broader perspective and technical insight into the research approach based on years of experience with the genetics, evolution, and management of resistance in insects, nematodes, and plants. He participated in the final stages of manuscript preparation. His being affiliated with one of the funding institutions does not alter our adherence to PLOS ONE policies on sharing data and materials.
