Pattern detection in bipartite networks: A review of terminology, applications, and methods

Rectangular association matrices with binary (0/1) entries are a common data structure in many research fields. These matrices can be equivalently expressed as bipartite networks that, in turn, can be projected onto pairs of unipartite networks. A variety of diversity statistics and network metrics can be used to quantify patterns in these matrices and networks

DARTS: Modelling effects of shocks on global, regional, urban and rural food security

DARTS is a new agent-based model that models monthly dynamics of food production, trade, stocking, consumption and food security for different interconnected world regions and a city state. Agents in different regions differ in their harvest seasons, wealth (rich and poor), degree of urbanisation and connection to domestic and global markets.

Trends and topics: Characterizing echo chambers’ topological stability and in-group attitudes

This paper offers a framework to explore how echo chambers evolve through time, considering their users’ interaction patterns and the content/attitude they convey while addressing specific controversial issues. The framework is then tested on three Reddit case studies focused on sociopolitical issues (gun control, American politics, and minority discrimination).

Emergence of economic and social disparities through competitive gift-giving

This article demonstrates that competitive gift-giving generates socioeconomic disparities characterized by power law distributions of wealth and social reputation. Organizational types, such as tribes and kingdoms, can be seen as distinct phases that depend on the frequency and scale of such gift-giving.
