Recent research has uncovered the important role of lipid droplets in pathogen replication. In the case of hepatitis C virus (HCV), lipid droplets (depicted here in yellow) are entangled in the viral replication organelle and support virus morphogenesis. In this context, it was unexpected that excessive expression of DGAT2 (magenta), which boosts lipid droplet accumulation, strongly impaired HCV replication. This study indicates that lipid fluxes between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and lipid droplets affect the formation of HCV replication organelle. Reichert et al., 2024.
