Saglin is a salivary gland-specific protein that has already been shown to affect transmission of the malaria parasite Plasmodium. The protein is expressed only in the median lobe of the female salivary gland, particularly in the cells of the base, which comprise only about one-third of the lobe. To study the saglin promoter, its coding sequence was replaced with the 3xP3 promoter fused to GFP. The activity of the 3xP3 promoter is usually observed in the larval nervous system, but in some individuals leads to strong GFP expression in the adult ommatidia. Klug et al 2022
