Ant toilets in other species

Posted by tomerczaczkes on 19 Feb 2015 at 09:25 GMT

Has anyone else observed such toilets (as distinct from garbage piles or kitchen middens), either in the wild or in the lab? It would be interesting to compile a list of observations. Please reply to this comment with your observations, including the species name and any other relevant details.

Trichomyrmex destructor apparently also make separate toilets and garbage dumps.
An example can be seen on this video

at time 7:25.

The creator of this video, who runs an ant store, reported that "all species that I've kept I have seen that ants have a bathroom area inside the nest that they do not place garbage in. I don't know if they go to the bathroom in their garbage piles outside of the nest but inside the nests the two are definitely separate."
