Interestingly, a recent paper by Schleheck et al. showed that P. aeruginosa PAO1 preferentially grows as aggregates in liquid batch cultures. During the growth phase it was found that 90% of the total biomass consisted of particles ranging from 5 to 600•m embedded in a fine structured extracellular matrix consisting of DNA [Schleheck D, Barraud N, Klebensberger J, Webb JS, McDougald D, et al. (2009) Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 preferentially grows as aggregates in liquid batch cultures and disperses upon starvation. PLoS One 4: e5513.]."
