The Genomics Standards Consortium has established standards.

One thing I find missing from this otherwise excellent paper is the mention of reporting standards. The Genomic Standards Consortium (http://gensc.org/) has established a checklist for reporting genomes in order to capture metadata for genomes in a consistent fashion to make downstream comparative analyses more feasible. It would be great to see journals and funding agencies adopt and/or further develop this checklist much in the way as INSDC accession numbers became mandatory for nucleotide sequence submissions. The GSC is also a member of MIBBI (see http://mibbi.org/) that promotes integrating existing checklists. Collections like the Plos ONE prokaryotic genomes collection are likely to be far more useful if standards are adopted an applied.
