Microsoft Word and LaTeX have their places.
LaTeX typically takes longer to setup formatting etc than Word, therefore, 30 minutes is unfair even for plain text writing.
Working with tables is another downside of LaTeX and users typically use tools that generate LaTeX code from an Excel file or equivalent.
LaTeX novices and experts outperform Word when it comes to equations, LaTeX's strenth.
Word does not support vector graphics, and the images have to be supplied as additional files or exported to formats with low resolution.
How about measuring system crashes in LONG documents such as thesis especially with embedded images, although they are not for much longer than a journal articles?
Having said above, a researcher needs to work with strengths of both systems for their purpose. I would not use LaTeX to write a 2-page letter. Writing a plain text-based articles works well in Word too. However, it does not make working with LaTeX a waste of time..
