An interesting case of cultural awareness

The hasty decision of retraction mainly due to the inappropriate use of language rather than the quality of research reminded me the following story shared by my student. Her father and her paternal grandfather are Christians. Her mother is a native American and is very religious to the religion of native Americans. (Please accept my apology for not able to name the religion. As most Chinese, I am an atheist and very insensitive and ignorant of different religons in the world.) My student, after exploring different religions, has decided to adopt the religion of native Americans. However, in her grandfather's view, she is an atheist because she did not believe in God. She is so shocked that her grandfather is so stubborn to take the meaning of the word just from his own point of view.

This retraction is just the opposite. In Dr. Gelman's view, the use of Creator implies the authors were referring to God while as a matter of a fact, the authors may know much less about God than Dr. Gelman himself. I now feel very proud of my student, who really demonstrates cultural awareness.
