How Effect Sizes Increase

It is especially interesting to consider how effect sizes increase as better data-analytic methods are employed (Figure 1).

If you effect sizes increase because you used the level of measurement with the greatest differences and highest variances, and then ran models specifically designed to highlight differences, how can this finding be "especially interesting"? I would have been shocked if the authors <em> did not </em> find an increase in effect size.
