This photograph shows an adult Rhodnius prolixus, which is the most important vector of Trypanosoma cruzi in Central America, Venezuela, and Colombia. R. prolixus is extremely well adapted to human habitat and is responsible for high infestation rates in houses and also for high infection prevalences in human populations. Insect vector populations are susceptible to insecticides, and domiciliated populations can be eliminated when suitable control programmes are established (see Castillo-Riquelme et al., doi:10.1371/journal.pntd.0000336).
