Catching the cooling sea breeze: Typical home in a coastal village endemic for malaria in Ngella, Solomon Islands
Homes of Southwest Pacific coastal villages characteristically line the beach. Malaria vectors are found within a kilometer of the coast and Plasmodium vivax is common. A population genetic survey of P. vivax across the Southwest Pacific, where malaria transmission declines from west to east, revealed an association between transmission, the degree of inbreeding and population structure. Within Solomon Islands, parasites were structured at different spatial scales, and diversity declined over an eight-year period of malaria control. Genetic surveillance is thus a useful tool for monitoring the impact of control efforts on P. vivax populations and will provide important guidance for targeted interventions. Waltmann et al.
