A first-instar larva of Culex pipiens pallens shortly after hatching.

Culex pipiens pallens is the most prevalent mosquito pest in China and an important vector of diseases including West Nile fever and lymphatic filariasis. Reproductive incompatibilities between some natural populations may be harnessed to develop eco-friendly and sustainable control strategies for mosquitoes such as this species. See Chen et al.
