Suicide prevention: Putting the person at the center

In this month's Editorial, Vikram Patel and Pattie Pramila Gonsalves explore the interaction of sociodemographic, economic, cultural and health-related factors that contribute to suicide in different populations and settings with mental health, rapid social change and gender discrimination being key.

The inclusion of suicide as a measure in the UN Sustainable Development Goals is a step in the right direction in pressing countries to develop policies around this human and social tragedy.
