Drosophila testis and male genital tract showing expression of a reporter construct

In this image, the reporter (djl-LacZ+intron) uses the transcriptional and translational control elements from the gene djl, along with an intron engineered into the reporter transcript, to drive expression of beta-galactosidase. The protein is expressed exclusively in elongating spermatids (stained blue), and is absent from cells at earlier stages of sperm development and from the somatic cells. See Caporilli et al.
