Craig et al. introduce the concept of "Cooperative adaptation to therapy" (CAT), in which cancer cells work together immediately upon 'seeing' a drug to build resistance even in the absence of new, acquired mutations. This novel paradigm may help explain why aggressive cancers, such as non-small cell lung cancer, are able to rapidly overcome the pressures of anticancer therapy even when 'druggable' mutations exist.

The image depicts clones of cancer cells converging in a unified, cooperative fashion on an iron throne of 'medicine'. The use of game theory mathematical modeling is represented by the 'foundation', which supports the overtaking of the 'throne'!
