Nice article. Thanks. One important issue for junior faculty is protected time for research during the first year or two. In most research intensive schools, junior faculty on tenure-track are expected to get grants and establish an independent research program. The first year can therefore be really busy and stressful. Writing good grants can take up a lot of time. I think it is important that all junior faculty should negotiate, at the time of recruitment, for protection from teaching at least for the first year or so. Otherwise, teaching can suck up a lot of time and compromise the establishment of a good research program. And this, in turn, can pose problems for reappointment and tenure reviews.
