Neisseria gonorrhoeae employs two protein inhibitors to evade killing by human lysozyme

Ng_1063 and Ng_1981 interact with human lysozyme in vivo.

A. Δ1981Δ1063, ΔltgA::ltgA-FLAG complement, ΔltgD::ltgD-FLAG complement, Δ1981Δ1063::1981-FLAG complement, and Δ1981Δ1063::1063(WT)-FLAG complement Gc were exposed to vehicle (V) or 1 mg/mL human lysozyme (L) for 3 hr. Gc were subsequently washed and lysed. Whole cell lysates were incubated with anti-FLAG resin for 2 hr and unbound material subsequently removed. Proteins bound to the anti-FLAG resin and whole cell lysates were analyzed by immunoblot for lysozyme and FLAG. Shown is 1 representative of 3 independent experiments. B. Δ1981Δ1063, Δ1981Δ1063::1981(WT)-FLAG, Δ1981Δ1063::1063(WT)-FLAG complement, Δ1981Δ1063::1063(S83A)-FLAG complement, and Δ1981Δ1063::1063(K103A)-FLAG complement Gc were exposed to vehicle (V) or human lysozyme (L) as in Fig. 3A.
