A virulence-associated filamentous bacteriophage of Neisseria meningitidis increases host-cell colonisation

Quantification of MDAΦ in the biomass.

Immunofluorescence microscopy performed on the biomass of bacteria colonizing FaDu cells. Bacteria grown under constant flow were harvested by aspiration from the monolayer of epithelial cells, as described in the material and methods section. Bacteriophages were labelled (in green) using the polyclonal antibody anti-MDAORF4 directed against the major capsid protein of MDAΦ. Bacteria are stained with DAPI (in blue). (1) Z5463, the green staining which correspond to the bacteriophages represents 75% of the DAPI surface; (2) Z5463ΔMDA, the green surface is only 0.24% of the DAPI surface.
