selection pressure implies fitness cost of natural SIV infections

SIV infections of natural host species are currently considered (largely) nonpathogenic. However, the new results presented here suggest that this group of viruses has imposed considerable and durable selection pressure for millions of years: this indicates that these infections must have some fitness cost after all.
