Formal marker strategy.

The production of an utterance by the speaker now involves an extra step (step iii) to identify words that are about the same object and add markers to them. In parsing, the hearer uses the markers to reconstruct the co-reference relations, and makes the variables for properties refering to the same object equal. In the present example, y and x are co-referential because the words that introduce properties with these variables contain the same markers. Only one possible interpretation, namely that the topic is and then remains.
