Manganese Enhances Prion Protein Survival in Model Soils and Increases Prion Infectivity to Cells

Metals and the survival of native PrP.

SMB cell extracts were applied to mte and the residual protein desorbed 24 months later. Western blot and immunodetection for PrP (ICMS-18) were used to detect the relative amounts of PrP that survived the incubation. The mte either contained no additional metals (H2O) or copper and manganese. Densitometric analyses of 3 western blots for each condition is shown at the bottom. Quantitation was of the visible bands. All intensity readings are relative to the protein desorbed from the mte with manganese. Shown are the mean and s.e.
