Mutations increase variation and diversity. If damaged DNA is not properly repaired by homologous recombination, variation and diversity would increase. Homologous recombination under normal circumstances functions to repair DNA or suppress mutations. If that could be enhanced by epigenetic modifications as your paper show, it follows that epigenetics normally functions to suppress genetic variation.
