The Synopsis (page 5 on) employs several species concepts which are a departure from the mainstay of views on the taxonomy of brinjal wild relatives. On this basis, it would be useful to provide precise specimen citations. This would allow updated species concepts/changes of view on synonymy, etc. to be substantiated (or otherwise). Although it is mentioned (page 3) that all species examined for the paper are recorded in the Solanaceae Source database, this does not seem to be the case for the two additions to the “eggplant clade”: S. umtuma and S. rigidum, or for S. insanum, whose circumscription has been reviewed substantially by Knapp et al. In addition, more precise details (i.e. country and herbarium for all specimens) for the specimens used for the drawings in Figure 2 would be very helpful, especially in the light of their views on north-south clinal variation in this species.
