Economic viability is the question

alleged non-profitability

The economic viability of individual crops and the supply-demand pathway are
far from secure/proven. It is a gamble whether or not being on the leading/bleeding edge of the crop development process will pay
off, and the results of that gamble could come after large investments
have been made, likely leaving the landscape is permanently altered,
whether or not the economics prove themselves. Plus there is the
whole, food versus fuel debate, not just in terms of crops that use
food crops as feedstock, but also in terms of competing land-uses. Often as not developing countries are taking this gamble on, with uncertain consequences.

No competing interests declared.
