Original Tumor Cell?

Posted by biotekno on 08 Jul 2013 at 00:38 GMT

The "Discussion and Conclusion" of the subject paper indicates:
"........the repeating allelic patterns for each locus throughout the tumor indicated a clonal origin of the metastasis and suggested that the tumor was generated from a prior fusion event between a donor BMDC and a patient tumor cell."

What is thought to be the nature of that original patient tumor cell? (which is thought to have fused with a donor BMDC)

For example, is that tumor cell thought to have already possessed (at the time of fusion) a mature melanoma genotype? phenotype?

Or could the patient cell have been a pre-malignant cell at the time of fusion with the donor BMDC?, which later developed into a mature melanoma cell?

Is the patient and/or donor still alive?
