Individual recapitulation of Figure 2

How accurate could participants reproduce Table 2 if asked after the experiment? How much do the results reported in the paper depend on the level of learning letter substitutes?

Observer KT, an author, could rattle off the list of substitutes (Figure 2) from memory. Most participants, we suspect, could not, though we did not quiz them. The percentage contributions of the three processes weren’t different for KT (Table 2), which suggests that knowledge of the substitution code doesn’t affect the main result.
