A very significant association with "Life-changing Religious Experience" at the begin of the study was found (p < 0.001) and it was the only significant factor at this level. A new, during the study "Life-changing Religious Experience", had no significant effect.

Could it be the other way around ?

The hippocampus is a major component of the brains of humans and other vertebrates. It belongs to the limbic system and plays important roles in the consolidation of information from short-term memory to long-term memory.

Malfunction of the short-term memory might be involved in cases of deja vu and religious experiences. In that case a "Life-changing Religious Experience" (at baseline) would be a marker for a malfunctioning (shrinking ?) hyppocampus later in life.
