We updated the previous forest elephant analysis of density and distribution across their range, using the datasets from 2002 through to 2013 for the sites in Central Africa . We ran the same models as in the previous analysis and calculated total decline since 2002, and annual decline for each country and for the region. These results show that now 65% of the 2002 population has now been lost, which means only 35% remain. The annual mortality rate remains exceedingly high, at 9% per year.
