Neglected diseases konzo and neurolathyrism.
Ethiopian victims of neurolathyrism often make a living from begging at churches in cities, avoiding socioeconomic dependency on their own deprived rural community. The typical symptoms of both konzo and neurolathyrism are scissor gait and walking on the balls of the feet. Some individuals have their toenails worn from dragging their bare feet over the ground. This person was begging at a Coptic church in Addis Ababa. See Diasolua Ngudi et al.
