I am surprised the article does not mention the European-Developing countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP), which comprises of 14 EU countries, Switzerland and Norway, + 47 sub-Saharan African countries. The article is US-centered when other initiatives exist. The EDCTP was launched in 2003 for the development of new or improved clinical interventions to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria through a long-term partnership between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. It will be renewed in January 2014 as part of the European Research program "Horizon 2020"
