In developing countries there is an urgent need for stressing on "ABC".AIDS remains a preventive disease, this does not justify higher government expenditure on buying expensive antiretroviral medicines;at the cost of diverting scarce resources which can be effectively utilised to design preventive programmes. There is logistics problem to ensure the supply of medicines specially if the drug supply is not ensured. This also calls for the need to upgrade public hospitals to monitor the side effects of treatment.
What is the impact of the celebrities promoting the cause of the disease?Over the period of time public attention has been forced away from emerging diseases. There also seems to be a subtle shift for promotion of free medicines at the cost of preventive healthcare."Prevention is better than cure" still remains true.
Sex education also has a role to play, specially in changing the attitudes towards sexual relationships and promoting safe sex practises.
