Vitamin D and Obesity Hypoventilation Sydrome

Posted by drarimanuel on 27 Feb 2013 at 13:21 GMT

We are interested in the findings from the study by Vimaleswaran et al on the relationship of Obesity and Vitamin D status. We are currently undertaking a study (http://clinicaltrials.gov...) looking at the potential causes of ventilatory failure in obesity. One of the potential hypotheses relates to acquired muscle weakness leading to the development of daytime hypercapnia in obesity. Vitamin D deficiency may be key to this. We have noted from our study to date (n = 52) that all the subjects have Vitamin D deficiency.Vitamin D deficiency ultimately may have a role in the pathogenesis of Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome (OHS).
