Subverted or followed?

authorship standards have been subverted

This is a strange conclusion. Current authorship standards, as laid down by ICMJE, simply do not allow someone whose only role was providing medical writing assistance to be listed as an author. Clearly Matheson disapproves of that situation, but the situation is what it is. It seems strange then, if pharmaceutical companies follow those guidelines and list medical writers in acknowledgements rather than authors, to say that the guidelines are being "subverted". I would rather say that the guidelines are being "followed".
