Surely it is relevant that Iona Heath is Chair of Ethics Committee, British Medical Journal? The BMJ; Journal of Psychiatry and others have been lavishly funded by adverts from drug companies for decades. Now such Journals are going on-line there is not as much 'paper space' in which to advertise and so it it timely to 'have a go' at pharmaceutical companies. They have not, as indeeed Iona Heath suggests, been the only culprits in the medicalisation of communities.

Competing interests declared: No competing interest but have campaigned for more openess and transparency and sharing of information with citizens through BMJ; J of Psych amongst other forums
