In an earlier analysis of viral genome composition (Trends Genet. 2005 May;21(5):264-8., http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15851060), we found a general tendency towards GC -> AT bias in retroid viruses (which go through a DNA stage during their replication) and to a lesser extent also in DNA viruses. Such a bias might thus be an inherent characteristic of DNA replication.
