Bayesian approach

Posted by WIYC on 27 Apr 2011 at 15:03 GMT

This research was based on the Bayesian approach:
"We estimated the phylogeny and divergence time splits simultaneously using a Bayesian approach as implemented in the program BEAST ver 1.5.3 [76], [77]."

Bayesian approach is yet to be determined a reliable tool:
"Templeton, with a doctorate in human genetics and a master's in statistics, has determined that a recently published genetic analysis of deep human DNA evolution is mathematically erroneous and formally illogical.
The flaws of the analysis are due to the incorrect application of a statistical method known as approximate Bayesian computation (ABC), which led Nelson J. R. Fagundes of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and colleagues to support the validity of the controversial “Out of Africa” replacement hypothesis in a 2007 paper.

Well they used Bayesian, Maximum Likelihood and Maximum Parsimony methods, so this critique is completely irrelevant.

The citation offered by WIYC refers to Aproximate Bayesian Computation, and not to Bayesian statistics in general. The software mentioned in the paper, BEAST, does not even used ABC.
