Recent data supports resettlement of Europe

Other studies [11],[12] have estimated divergence times between Europeans and East Asians similar to the ≈23 kya we infer. Interestingly, archeological evidence places humans in Europe much earlier (≈40 kya) [1].

A recent article in Science ( http://dx.doi.org/10.1126/science.1176869 ) compared mtDNA from ancient European hunter-gathers, more recent European farmers, and contemporary Europeans. They found that the ancient hunter-gatherers contributed little to the contemporary gene pool, suggesting that contemporary Europeans are descended primarily from more recent migrants into Europe. This is consistent with our relatively recent inferred date for European-Asian divergence.
