This minimal circuitry comprises superficial (layers 2 and 3) and deep (layers 5 and 6) pyramidal cells and a population of smooth cells in layer 4C. Feedforward thalamic inputs target all cell populations. Weaker (modulatory) connections are shown in gray. In the original microcircuit model it was assumed that direct thalamic inputs to deep layers were weak. However, a recent experimental study indicates that these inputs are comparable to those innervating layer 4C [67]. Thus the classical direct pathway ThL4 → L2/3 → L5/6 (red) is supplemented by an additional direct pathway ThL5/6 → L2/3 (blue).
