(b): histogram of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sample from θ. Posterior inference strongly suggests the presence of unexplained technical noise in gene expression measurements. In fact, the posterior distribution of θ is concentrated away from zero and—even though the posterior distributions of the sj’s are highly homogeneous across cells (see Fig 4(b))—there is a strong heterogeneity among the posterior distributions of the νj’s (evidenced by non-overlapping 95% high posterior density intervals).
