One of the problems with using article level metrics is that few sites agree on which metrics they will gather. There are many places to "Publish" and no consistency yet in which metrics are most useful so each site may use it's own metrics.
Also, you might want to look at search engine hits, If you could filter by actual selection to limit the false positives, you might get an interest factor.
